Tuesday, July 17: Today the Sisters began preparation toward the process for the election of the new General Administration by observing a morning of reflection. The beginning prayer was the singing of “Heavenly King’ in the distinct yet blended languages of the delegates. Bishop Florantin Crihӑlmeanu, of Romania guided the Sisters through three sources for the reflection: the Gospel story of Jesus asking Peter, “Do you love Me?;” a book on the writings of Saint Basil regarding leadership and the qualities of those who so serve; and “Community and the Task of Authority” from Vita Consecrata.

In referring to the Gospel story, Bishop Florantin mentioned that the dialogue between Jesus and Peter is a journey of spiritual healing. The old Simon of Jonah, so generous and large-hearted, at times tender, at times proud, is transformed as Peter, who becomes strong as the Rock from which he is hewn. From the book on St. Basil, the superior is described as one who, “must be impartial and peaceable, balanced and prompt in work, mild with the Sisters, a good administrator, and balanced in everything.” Vita Consecrata, notes that, “In community life, the power of the Holy Spirit as work in one individual passes at the same time to all. Here not only does each enjoy his own gift, but makes it abound by sharing it with others; and each one enjoys the fruits of the other’s gift as if it were his own.”

This was followed by a period of silent reflection, and then sharing in small international groups. The morning concluded with sharing in the large group.

In the afternoon, the delegates met in small groups of their own languages. Each group named three qualities needed by the new General Superior at this time. These were presented in the large group, and similarities were observed. The rest of the afternoon was spent in silence, prayer, and reflection. In the evening, Bishop Florentin offered a contemplation on the Icon of Pentecost.
