31 05 16 1Millions of pilgrims from around the world come in pilgrimage to pray at the Holy Doors of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican City during this special Jubilee Year of Mercy. On Tuesday, May 31 the Congregation for Oriental Churches organized such a pilgrimage for all Eastern Catholics in the Rome vacinity. Invited were Eastern Hierarchs, members of all Communities and Congregations of Consecrated Life with their Generalates in Rome, seminarians, sisters and other students studying in various Pontifical Institutes of Eastern Churches.

Our Generalate of the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great was represented by Sisters Lydia Anna Sawka, Mariela Rotzen, Atanasia Anheluk and Sevastiana Zinkevych. Hundreds assembled at the gathering area near the Castel Sant’ Angelo where they formed a procession led by the symbolic Cross for the Year of Mercy. After words of welcome, prayer and reflection by Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Chruches, the procession moved through the designated route praying the rosary, reflecting on the Sorrowful Mysteries and singing Psalms led by of students from various Pontifical Institutes/Collegios. Upon entering St. Peter’s Basilica through the Holy Door of Mercy, all proceeded through the central aisle to the Tomb of St. Peter, where there was a Gospel reading and reflection by Cardinal Leonardo Sandri followed by prescribed prayers for the Jubilee Year. A group photo concluded the memorable pilgrimage. It was moving to experience such a prayerful event with so many members of various Eastern Churches, among them the Maronites, Ethiopians, Romanians, Ukrainians, Ruthenians, Armenians, Russians and others.
